Yes, it is over a month past Christmas. Days disappear speedily. But we treasure the joyful memories of Christmas 2012. We are reminded to "keep Christmas" every day by President Thomas S. Monson who counseled:"when we keep the spirit of Christmas, we keep the Spirit of Christ, for the Christmas spirit is the Christ Spirit." (November 2011

Grateful memory: having Sisters Peterson and Jensen
visiting for Christmas
|
As we have mentioned, we love candles in the windows, a New England tradition. We enjoy the bonus of "keeping Christmas" as many homes continue to have candles lit in the windows the month and more after Christmas. At little internet research suggests that in colonial America, candles in the window were lit to honor important visitors, announce births or celebrate. (appropriate for Christmas!) With the long dark nights in New England, we are grateful for the candles! Living in New England, we better understand the words of the Christmas tune. We need a little Christmas "Right this very minute,
Candles in the window, Carols at the spinet.Yes, we need a little Christmas Right this very minute.We need a little Christmas now."
The snow piled up after Christmas and continues with a cold snap that has led to innumerable frozen pipes. The snow on snow on snow reminds us of a Christmas song from a poem by Christina Rossetti, the words of which President Wilkey used to remind missionaries of having a "set apart heart," a heart and mind consecrated to our purpose of inviting others to receive the blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

stone walls |
In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,...
Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.
In the
bleak midwinter, long ago.
Our God,
Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and
earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the
bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord
God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
Enough for
Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful
of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for
Him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and
ass and camel which adore.
Angels and
archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim
and seraphim thronged the air;
But His
mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped
the beloved with a kiss.
What can I
give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a

If I were a
Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I
